Substance Abuse Evaluations
“If a DOT employee has a positive test result, a refusal to submit to testing, or a violation that doesn’t involve a test, they must complete a SAP return-to-duty process before returning to DOT safety-sensitive functions.” www.saplist.com
SAP Evaluations
If you have a commercial driver’s license, or perform certain safety-sensitive duties, you are governed by the guidelines of the Department of Transportation.
Under the Department of Transportation’s Title 49 CFR Part 40, when you test positive on a drug or alcohol test, you must have a substance abuse evaluation. This evaluation must be conducted by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). Evaluation and treatment recommendations must be followed prior to being considered for returning to safety sensitive duties.
What is SAP?
The SAP organization provides an online directory of qualified Substance Abuse Professional. If you have a violation, you are required to set up a face-to-face assessment.
What is the role of SAP Professional?
SAP’s fundamental responsibility is to provide a comprehensive face-to-face assessment and clinical evaluation. This evaluation determines the level of assistance needed to resolve problems associated with alcohol or prohibited drug use.
Once the evaluation has been completed, the SAP Professional then recommends a course of education and/or treatment.
A follow-up evaluation is also be required. This evaluation will determine whether you have demonstrated successful compliance and can be considered to return to DOT safety-sensitive duties.
SAP Counselor Accreditation
SAP Professionals are required to receive training from a nationally recognized professional organization. This organization must be sanctioned by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
I am certified by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, and regularly attend Department of Transportation training classes. I am also affiliated with multiple SAP professional organizations.
What can I expect in the evaluation process?
Evaluation includes an in-depth personal interview. I use assessment tools including the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST), the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST), the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Screening Tools.
At your request, I can provide test results to your attorney, case manager, or to the court.
Can I see any drug or alcohol counselor?
Only trained and qualified Substance Abuse Professionals can complete DOT approved SAP assessments.
